The Minecraft Third Drop 2026 — officially named Wilderness Bound, version 26.3 on Java and 26.50 on Bedrock — is the autumn update Mojang revealed on 5 September 2026 during MC Championship: Fall Stars. It is not out yet. It is in snapshots and preview builds right now, with a full release expected in September 2026. This guide covers every feature that is actually confirmed, so you know what is coming and what is still a guess.
What the Minecraft Third Drop 2026 actually is
Mojang switched to a “game drop” model in 2025 — several smaller updates a year instead of one large annual release. Wilderness Bound is the third drop of 2026. The headline is a new forest biome, but the changes most likely to affect your everyday builds are the new stair and slab types. Everything below is pulled from the official preview builds and the Minecraft Wiki changelog — no leaks, no speculation.
The Dappled Forest biome
The Dappled Forest is an autumn-themed woodland. What generates in it:
- Poplar trees in three leaf colours — red, orange and yellow — with leaves that visibly drift down as particles.
- Orange-tinted grass, leaf litter across the ground, patches of coarse dirt and scattered red shrubs.
- Shelf mushrooms growing on tree trunks in small and large sizes, alongside the usual brown mushrooms.
- Sparse spruce trees mixed in, so it reads as a real transitional forest rather than a one-tree biome.
It generates as a normal overworld biome, so you find it by exploring — or with one of the new explorer maps covered further down.
Poplar wood is a complete set
New wood types often arrive half-finished. Poplar does not. The confirmed set includes logs and stripped logs, planks, stairs, slabs, fences and fence gates, doors and trapdoors, buttons, pressure plates, signs and hanging signs, saplings, all three leaf variants, and — new for a wood set — shelves. There are also poplar boats and poplar chest boats. If you build with wood, this is a full palette from day one.
Wool and concrete stairs and slabs
This is the quiet headline. Wilderness Bound adds stairs and slabs for all 16 colours of wool and all 16 colours of concrete — 64 new building blocks in one drop. Concrete stairs give clean, coloured hard edges without falling back on terracotta or glazed blocks. Wool stairs and slabs open up soft, padded-looking interiors, stadium seating and fine pixel-art detailing that full blocks could never do. For most players this will change more builds than the new biome does.
Straw beds, cushions and the abandoned camp
- Straw beds let you skip the night, but they are single-use and do not set your spawn point. They are a cheap early-game stopgap, not a replacement for a real bed.
- Cushions come in 16 colours and are genuinely sittable — they are entities you can sit on, a first for a decoration block.
- Abandoned camps are a new small structure that generates with different variants depending on the biome around it — 16 biome-specific versions — usually holding a loot chest.

Two smaller changes are easy to miss. First, mushroom stew can now be crafted with any two mushroom types — red, brown or the new shelf mushrooms, in any combination. Second, explorer maps can no longer be zoomed out in a cartography table, so frame them before you copy. The drop also adds eight biome-specific explorer maps and dedicated structure maps for ancient cities, mineshafts, desert pyramids and warm ocean ruins, plus refreshed map textures and player icons.
How to try Wilderness Bound now
You do not have to wait for release to test it:
- Java Edition: enable snapshots in the launcher (Installations → New → tick “snapshots”). Several 26.3 snapshots and pre-releases are already out.
- Bedrock Edition: install Minecraft Preview on Windows, iOS or console, or join the beta through the Xbox Insider Hub. The new content sits behind an experimental toggle when you create the world.
Snapshot and preview worlds can break between versions, so always use a copy of your world, never your main save.
When does the Third Drop 2026 release?
There is no confirmed release date. Mojang has said only September 2026, and the name reveal on 5 September points to a launch in the back half of the month — drops have historically landed one to two weeks after the name is announced. Anyone giving you an exact day right now is guessing. We will update this page the moment the date is official.
